Physiotherapy & Acupuncture Ann offers all the following modalities either individually or in combination. Nearly all the modalities work well in combination e.g. acupuncture & physiotherapy. This is where tailored treatments are given depending on the individual and the problem experienced.
Physiotherapy The aim of physiotherapy is to restore normal body function. The body is a multi-system structure which works in tandem and balance. Each part of the body connects to all other parts either directly or from a distance (eg. back injury can produce foot pain). All systems (nervous system/digestive system etc) of the body are also connected with ALL the other parts. Ann as a physiotherapist offers a holistic approach - ie considers the body as a WHOLE not an isolated problematic area only.
Physiotherapy offers a hands on treatment in the form of massage and/or gentle movements (manipulation) of the individual relevant joints/soft tissue. Treatment is supported with movement of the body and exercise. Advice is given on how to integrate recommendations of exercise and activity into your lifestyle (eg. how to arrange your home office with ease).
Acupuncture Acupuncture is the stimulation of specific points sited on or close to the surface of the skin. The stimulation of these points can be done with or without needles, this in turn stimulates the nerves and the pituitary system which is situated at the base of the brain. The pituitary system also creates the release of endorphins (the body's natural pain relieving chemicals). The endorphins play a big role in the functioning of the hormonal system. It is not clear how acupuncture works but blood tests taken before and after the application of acupuncture show a change in the blood chemicals. After acupuncture there is an increase in natural painkillers, anti-inflammatories and cells which assist the immune system.
